Obama and American Exceptionalism

Numerous commentators have observed that President Obama's Libya speech last night rested on an affirmation of American "exceptionalism." That conviction, they contend, was expressed by Obama's appeal to "America’s responsibility as a leader" and by this claim: "some nations may be able to turn a blind eye to atrocities in other countries. The United States of America is different."

And the most enthusiastic praise for Obama's speech came from Bill Kristol in The Weekly Standard, who gushed that with this speech, "President Obama had rejoined --

NATO to Take Libya Command on Wednesday: Obama

WASHINGTON: NATO will take command of all coalition military operations in Libya on Wednesday, US President Barack Obama said Monday in a nationally televised address to the American people.

The GOP's Plan to Fund Anti-Abortionist Activists

Congressional Republicans have made a big deal about slashing funds for Planned Parenthood and other family planning programs, claiming that these cuts are necessary to address the federal deficit. But one of those lawmakers has been pushing his own measure to provide additional federal funds to so-called crisis pregnancy centers—unregulated and uncertified clinics that try to deter women from seeking abortions.

Crisis pregnancy centers—often run by religious groups—received $30 million from HHS between 2001 and 2006 for abstinence-only programs and other projects, according to a 2006 House Energy and Commerce Committee report. The HHS grant database indicates another $9.3 million in grants were given to CPCs since 2007.

Gerry, Out Front (Geraldine Ferraro)

SHE WAS FEISTY and she was first: Geraldine Ferraro proved a gutsy campaigner as the first woman to run for a national office on a major-party ticket. "Every time a woman runs, women win," she would say later. The former congresswoman and vice-presidential candidate succumbed to cancer on Saturday at 75.

For many feminists in the Democratic Party, 1984 was the right time for a woman on the ticket. But presidential candidate Walter Mondale's pickings were slim. There just weren't that many females in politics. He settled on Ms. Ferraro, a former prosecutor who had served three terms in Congress as a representative from New York.

Applauding Sarah Palin's nomination for vice president, Ms. Ferraro said, "It's great to be the first, but I don't want to be the only."

Bill Maher at the Winspear on Sunday Night: 'Your New Theater Isn't Gonna Be Clean for Long'

I’ve seen Kathy Griffin perform live, and Joan Rivers and Lisa Lampanelli and Chris Rock — and they are all hilarious and edgy and daring comics who say outrageous things and go places that scare a lot of other comedians — but none of them can hold a candle to Bill Maher. Bill Maher is a shock comic who doesn’t say things just to shock: He says them because they are true.

It’s that fearlessness — he acknowledged that some people would probably be uncomfortable with some of his remarks about religion, not to mention calling Sarah Palin a “cunt” (“there’s just no other word for her”) — that makes Maher the most dangerous person in comedy. He’s painfully well-informed,
